What is RSS?

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are an easy and efficient way to receive notification when new information is available on a website. Headings and summaries of items on the website are made available.

What is the Benefit From RSS?

RSS feeds save time, allowing you to receive notification only when new content is available. On the web site you can choose the information that you would like to receive by subscribing to it - you can unsubscribe from any feed at any time.

How To Subscribe to RSS Feeds?

If you are using the latest Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox Browsers - these are already equipped to handle RSS feeds. However if you have an older browser or one not capable of handling these feeds Then you will need an RSS feed reader (also called a news aggregator). There are a number of RSS readers available to download from the internet. The "rssreader" obtained from http://www.rssreader.com/ is one that I have used. RSS readers are simply programs that display the contents of an RSS feed in an easy to read format.

Once you have an RSS reader you simply click on the RSS icon or on a link to the RSS feed and paste it into your RSS reader. Some readers will auto detect the presence of an RSS feed on a website and can offer you as an option a subscription.

The RSS Feed Available on This Site

All major news sites have RSS feeds available The BBC, CNN, The Daily Telegraph, The Mail and virtually all national news papers and broadcasters. The one in the news is YouTube. Podcasts with Sound and Video are achieved as "attachments" to the basic text RSS feed. At the moment the feed from this site is text only. The following shows the current content of the feed:-

This is the first RSS feed item to be published on the Abbots Leigh Website. It is hoped that all villagers with computers will avail themselves of this service, which has been established to serve their interests. It is the intention that this new service will help to keep everybody informed of local news, events and development in the village. Many of the items will originate from the Parish Council and from the Civic Society but that is no reason why other items of general interest should not appear as well. There are many local groups who can take advantage of this means of communication. A separate feed to service just that village group can be made available and serviced.
