Lorna PlewsHi there,My family and I are suffering from mild colds and I've just found a bottle of 'Sure cure'. It must be about three years old and has no date of expiry. It was recommended to me by Jan de Vries. As you can deduce, we are not heavy cold sufferers and follow a healthy diet and vitimins regime. Could you tell me if this bottle, {and one half used) is still usable. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Lorna Plews
Dear Lorna
Whilst we have a very active group of herbalists in our North Somerset Village, they have not found the Sure Cure for the Common Cold. That is the claim of the Abbotts Of Leigh in Greater Manchester. The Abbotts do not appear to have their own website but here are the contact details obtained from a visit to the Leigh Businesses Site ![]() Also Jan de Vries can be contacted:- "If you have problems obtaining any of the products mentioned, contact our helpline, 01292 318846, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm, or write to Jan de Vries c/o Belfast Telegraph, 124 Royal Avenue, Belfast, BT1 1EN. Or email orders@jandevrieshealth.co.uk " Hope you get well soon . Regards

Maggie EllisBournemouth, DorsetI came across this site by accident. I remember spending part of my childhood at Leigh Court Farm, and at that time, the "big house" was a mental home. It was good to look at some of the pictures but so far as I can ascertain, none of the posts refer to the mental home and when it was opened and closed and what it is used for now. I remember my aunt, Josephine Collins showing me inside the house and I had a play on the organ which then was still in situ. If I close my eyes I am transported back more than 45 years and can see it all like it was yesterday. What a trip down memory lane. Maggie Ellis

FionaI would like to assure Ruth Lambert that the carpet at our wedding in 1960 did not reach all the way from The Chantry to the church - it commenced at the path leading to the church from the Village Green!!I have just read this entry over a year late. I have been so fascinated reading the site that my husband will get a very late supper tonight! Fiona
Dear Fiona
I believe you have confirmed that retaining old messages on the website is a good strategem. After all most of the messages are in their own way timeless. Thank you for your interest.

TeresaWhat an interesting website. My grandmothers family came from Abots Leigh, and I have visited the church , and found my GGgrandparents grave they were Sarah and Joseph Hellin. It was a surprise to see a reference to Joseph Hellin on your site about him acting as a constable would this mean a police constable ,and if so would that mean it would have not been a full time job. Also where could I obtain a copy of Abbots Leigh a village history Thank you for a very informative site..Teresa
Dear Teresa
Sorry about the slow reply - I have been preoccupied with adding more history to the site. If you now enter "Josph Hellin" into the site search engine - on the front page - then it will find two papers on site which mention him and give his occupation as carpenter. The Village History by William Evans published by the Abbots Leigh Civic Society may be obtained by contacts: Graham Heywood (Chairman) on 01275-375424 or Sue Mountstevens (Secretary) on 01275-372755

Ruth Lambert (nee Cockram)Just to say I enjoy looking at the web site. I was brought up in the village and went to the school, leaving in 1954. As a small person, I remember an even smaller person playing on the Green with his tricycle, waiting for older siblings to come out of school. His name was Steve....My father worked at Leigh Court. A year or 2 back I went to the Open Day at the farm and spent the rest of the day in the village. I could write forever but would just like to say I remember Fiona's wedding day and the carpet for her from the Chantry to the Church. I am also in the Coronation Day photo of the all the kids in fancy dress at the tree. Ruth

Mary GrovesDear webmasterI have been interested in Abbots Leigh for some time as my great great great grandparents Charles and Bathseba Chapman were teachers in Abbots Leigh in the 19th century. My great great grandparents George Reed and Mary Olivia Chapman married in the parish church at Abbots Leigh on July 13th 187? (I can't decipher the last figure on the date). Bathsheba died aged 58 in 1876 and is buried in Abbots Leigh. My question is whether the graves are still clearly marked and whether it would be possible to see her grave. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Mary Groves
Dear Mary Thank you for your email. At the moment a map of the locations of the graves in Abbots Leigh is under preparation and I have forwarded your email to the appropriate persons who may be able to answer your query.

Terry WilliamsI was born and raised down Blackmoor Road, 1940's and 50's before going to Africa. I thought some of the residents of the village in those years would like to know that I met up with John Hood and Spud Murphy a few weeks ago in Pilgims Rest, South Africa. John owns a Game Reserve near there and Spud (Patrick) was visiting from Darwin, Australia. We were all in Northern Rhodesia Police together in the 60's and met after 50 years! Three chaps all from Abbots Leigh meeting in South Africa after 50 years - amazing! Some current residents may not use your website regularly but I assure you that those that used to sit around the old tree do! Terry (known as Terence in Abbots Leigh) Just come across your email - which arrived without my noticing it, sorry about that - one of my senior moments. Good to hear from you. Now available on site.. Hope you get a response.

Family HistoryEvery member of our family has carried DORSON as their middle name. But it's always been a mystry why? Over the past few months I've tracked the name to Ann Dorson who was born at Abbots Leigh and Christened at Holy Trinity on 6th august 1826. She married Edward King (my great great grand father)in 1851. However, Ann Dorson's family can be traced back to Edward Dorson born 1751 at Abbots Leigh and was buried there on 30 January 1830. He married Grace Knight at Holy Trinity Abbots Leigh 1st January 1782. Grace was the daughter of John Knight of Abbots Leigh. She was a pensioner of independent means and was buried at Holy Trinity on 22nd February 1854. Yesterday I visited the church and graveyard but couldn't find any trace of the Dorson or Knight families. I'm just wondering if there is anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction or have any suggestions on how I might find out a little more about the Dorson or Knight families from Abbots Leigh.Thank you for taking the time to read this and look forward to hearing from you. Best regards Roger Lloyd Thank you for your entry. A quick check in the "Abbots Leigh - A Village History" by William Evans reveals the following : "In the 1840s the office of constable appears to have rotated between Thomas Pike a gardener, Reuben Hollyman the butcher, Edward Dorson the shoemaker, John Arnott a gardener, and Joseph Hellin a carpenter, but they had little to do." There may well be more knowledge in the village. You can be contacted here by someone who may have this.

Message via Photo GalleryI am the youngest of the 5 Inskip children born at The Chantry (me in 1933), My husband and I have lived in Canada since 1961 (Newfoundland for 25 years and now Nova Scotia). I only discovered the Abbots Leigh web site a couple of weeks ago, and just now the photo of Church road which I studied recounting the folk who lived in the various houses some 50 years ago!Steven Livings has done a great job for the history of the village. I used to visit his mother in their cottage, with our nanny who took clothing along to help the crowd! I can also shut my eyes and visualise Mr. Livings in his black cassock inside the church door on Sunday mornings; I wonder if he ever failed to be at his duties there? Anyway, very many thanks for bringing back so many memories of my youth. I will continue to follow the site. Fiona Gray

Responding to "Heroic Shepherd" Article on the Village PageFollowing the death of my mother, I have been pouring through various family archives that she held onto. Her father was Edward Mitchell, Head Shepherd in Englefield, Berkshire. He had various brothers, including one Fred Mitchell, who I believe was Shepherd to the Wills Estate at Abbots Leigh. We have photos of my grandfather and grandmother which are marked as being at Abbots Leigh, including one where my grandmother is sat by a lake (having lived in Clifton for many years, I cannot picture where this is). Anyway, I would love to find out more about the article on your website, confirm that it is the same Fred (I recall my mother telling me about a war time episode where he saved many sheep but not about an OBE) and even what, if any family are left remaining (and indeed his father, who I believe was called Frank and who died relatively young). In all, I believe they had around 10 siblings, the youngest, Charlie, dying around the age of 10. My grandfather, Edward (called Ted) was the oldest I believe from family records). My mother was Ethel May Woodley (nee Mitchell). If anyone can provide any information, perhaps on where Fred is buried, I would be most appreciative. Regards Peter Woodley. Thank you for your email. Anyone who can give more information on the Mitchell family can contact you here Marcus Palmén - Web Master

Dear Marcus, My name is Naomi Cooper ( nee Southerington) and I lived at Manor View Cottage, Manor Lane, Abbots Leigh up until I was eighteen. I lived with my parents and 2 sisters. I was the middle of 3 girls. My parents were both Market Gardens (Gill and Frank Southerington). All 3 of us girls went to Abbots Leigh Primary School. I saw on your web site that someone was enquiring about the primary school and wondered if anyone has any photos of the school. Yes!! I have a school photograph. Unfortunately I do not know the year that it was taken. Should you wish to have a copy of this photo, then please reply to me and I will forward it to you. I was born in July 1955 and I am currently living in Twickenham, Middlesex. About 20 years ago my parents left Abbots Leigh and went to live in Norfolk. Unfortunately my Mum passed away in December 2000 and my Dad in June 2001. I am not sure if there is anybody left in the village who would know of us now. I visited Abbots Leigh over 10 years ago and found to my dismay that my primary school that I so loved as a child had been converted to a private home. Oh well. life carries on!! I love the information that you have on the village as it is nearly the last contact I have with my past childhood. I greatly look forward to hearing from you in the very near future. Bye for now Naomi Dear Naomi As someone who should know better I have run into difficulties with my website email on changing computers and did loose for a time most of my April Web site email. I have just recovered most of it including yours. I would be interested in your photo and I am sure there are people who will remember you, once I get this information on site, to let people know. As a resident of the village from 1982 I myself am a relative newcomer. Sorry for the delay in replying. Marcus

Hi I have just discovered your great village site. I am one of those sad people researching our family history. My late wife was a White, her great grandfather was William White and was a farm bailiff somewhere in Abbots Leigh. on your site Steve Livings history of parish meetings mentions his son being persuaded into the 1914-18 war. I have found record of three of their deaths, Ernest was killed on the HMS Princess Royal at the Battle of Jutland 31/5/1916, (his only son Ernest was a pilot in WW2 and died 29/9/1941 when his bomber crashed,he is buried at Weston Super Mare), Thomas at Salonika 30/9/1916, Gilbert at Mesopotamia 26/2/1917 (not Saloniki as stated on your war memorial). I am still looking to find where William was employed and would be very grateful if any of your readers know of any books on the history of your village covering this period 1912 on. Regards Ken Clark I am at the moment enjoying a holiday in Seattle, the state of Washington, and have passed your email on to Steve. Good to hear from you Marcus - Web Master |
