North Somerset Council have informed the Parish Council that the bid to have The George listed as an Asset of Community Value has been successful. The asset will now be included on the
NSC List of Assets of Community Value and will remain there for five years. The owner has the opportunity until 22nd May to request a review of this decision.
The effect of this listing is to prevent the owner disposing of the freehold or granting a lease of 25 years or more without giving the local community the opportunity to put a bid together. There will then be a moratorium during which restrictions on disposal will apply.
What happens next? The Parish Council has taken the view that it would be wise for the community to put in place contingency plans in case The George were to be put up for sale and a community bid could be made. Would we wish to buy the pub? Do we have the managerial skills? Is the pub a going concern? Could we raise the funds? All these, and other, questions will be on the agenda at the Parish AGM on 17th May 17th and will be the subject of a special village meeting later in the summer.
