Think Bike!

With the darker evenings and a near incident on the main road with an unlit bicycle, it seems like a good moment to remind cyclists of the Highway Code, Clause 60:

“At night your cycle must have white front and red rear lights lit. It must also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if made after 1/10/85). White front reflectors and spoke reflectors will also help you to be seen. Flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.”

FAQ’s for waste collections in the adverse weather

Due to the adverse weather conditions and the Met Office forecast for the next three days, there will be no wste or recycling collections in North Somerset until Monday 11 January, at the earliest.

The revised collection calendar for Christmas and New Year changes has now been scrapped to avoid confusion, so the normal collection timetable will resume from Monday.

How do I find out my collection day?
Residents are advised to check their recycling collection calendar to determine their normal collection day and to ignore the dates in red on the calendar as these were the revised collection dates. Alternatively

What do I do with the waste I have?
Anyone who has left their waste and recycling at the kerbside for collection is now being advised to take it back in until next week and to place it out on their next normal collection day.

When will waste collections resume?
We anticipate that collections will be able to resume on Monday 11 January dependant on weather conditions prevailing.

I have lots of extra waste and recycling from Christmas and New Year – what am I meant to do with it?
You need to keep it on your property until your next waste and recycling collection day.

Can I recycle my Christmas tree?
Yes – the green garden waste collections in January are over a two week period commencing Monday 11 January through to Friday 22 January so just place your tree out for collection with your green waste and refuse.

Can I deposit my waste at the Recycling Centres?
Unfortunately we have had to close all three sites – we will open them as soon as we are able to. For up to date information on closures visit our Emergency Closures page on the website.

Why can’t the council collect?
Although the major routes in our area are now free from snow and ice, many of the minor roads are still iced over, and the pavements are also very slippery in places. For this reason, and bearing in mind the weather forecast for the next few days, it is not safe for us to send out the waste collection crews.

Is there a risk from vermin?
There is little risk from vermin in this extreme cold.

Won’t the food waste in my black bags start to smell?
In this weather the food waste is likely to be frozen and certainly will not start to decay.

Good News For Recycling

North Somerset Council have decided to change waste and recycling services in North Somerset from next spring when a new waste and recycling collection contract is implemented.

As well as those materials already collected with the current green box scheme (paper, tins and cans, glass, textiles and shoes) the new and improved weekly kerbside recycling service will also include:
  • all types of cardboard
  • plastics
  • food and drink cartons
  • batteries
Also, food waste will be collected in special boxes on a weekly basis
Rubbish will be collected in wheelie bins fortnightly on alternate weeks to the green waste/ green bag collections
To find out more about all the changes read the article in the November North Somerset Life magazine or download it here.

Dealing with disks

CDs and DVDs are made from polycarbonates that take an age to break down in landfill. Why not either pass unwanted disks on to friends or charity shops or offer them on community re-use sites such as Freecycle? Failing that, take them to a firm that offers safe recycling options, such as London Recycling (www.london-recycling.co.uk) or Waste Care (www.wastecare.co.uk/environmental-compliance). Thanks to Michael Bloch of Green Living Tips (www.greenlivingtips.com) for this handy hint.

Another way of Recycling

Items that may well be still of use but need a new home could be catered for by a local Freecycle Network.

Freecycle Logo The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving stuff for free. Each group is run by local volunteer moderators.

One rule: everything posted must be free. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, toys or an old door. Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself? Respond to the posting directly and you just might get it. After that it is up to the giver to set up a time for passing on the treasure.

We will come to groups like mother & toddlers, pensioners, football clubs or even the local supermarket.
  • We will provide updates every month on local issues either at meetings or on our website.

We want to do our best for you. If we fail to meet our Pledge we will always explain why it has not been possible to deliver the standards to which we aspire and you deserve.
