Recycling and Rubbish
Reduce Electrical WasteOver 154 million small electrical products were bought last year, and only 10 per cent were recycled. The majority of electrical waste ends up in landfill but because of lead and toxins which contaminate soil and water they are classified as hazardous. It is important to recycle electrical goods because they contain materials which can be salvaged such as plastics, ceramics and precious metals. An average iron contains enough steel to produce 13 steel cans. Recycling helps to save natural finite resources and reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending electrical goods to landfill. Websites such as Gumtree and Freecycle give residents in North Somerset the opportunity to give products away. Many charities also accept electrical items. Some companies now pay for old mobile phones too, an excellent way to get paid for recycling. Local charities accepting electronic items:
Electrical goods can be taken to the recycling centres at Portishead. Look out for pink electrical signs or ask an attendant. Another way of Recycling
The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving stuff for free. Each group is run by local volunteer moderators. One rule: everything posted must be free. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, toys or an old door. Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself? Respond to the posting directly and you just might get it. After that it is up to the giver to set up a time for passing on the treasure. The Bristol Group website is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FreecycleBristol/ and you can contact via email:- |
