Parish Notes
We’ve lost the Pub, can we afford to lose the Village Market too?
The Village Market was established in 2006. Its aims were twofold:
to give villagers the chance to buy local foods direct from the producers and
‚ with volunteers providing refreshments, to be a place to relax with a newspaper, meet new people or catch up on village news over a cuppa.
The Village Market has played a significant part in helping to build the strong community that makes Abbots Leigh such a special place to live.
This monthly social event in the village diary remains popular with regular customers and the team of committed volunteers. It attracts customers from neighbouring villages too. However, support over the past few months has dwindled. Producers have remarked that the market is becoming less viable.
Without renewed support, there is a strong chance that we could lose the Market too.

Village Market in its Hay Day
Tell us what you think.
Do you value the Village Market? If you are a regular customer, tell us what you like and what could be improved. If you have stopped coming, what are your reasons and what would entice you back? If you’ve never been to the market, did you know that you can buy Herbert’s bread fresh from the bakers, honey from local beekeeper Dave Maslen, farm produce from Gatcombe Farm in Long Ashton and our own Leigh Court Farm, and a delicious range of homemade jams, chutneys and pastries? If you like meeting people, why not drop in for coffee and croissants and a browse of the weekend newspapers. Do you have ideas for promoting the market?
We would welcome your comments (email them to Pip A’Ness at pip.aness@talbot-ponsonby.org, or phone Pip on 07816 152507 or John Blain on 01275 372387), but above all, we would welcome your custom.
The Village Market is held on the second Saturday of every month at the village hall.
Forthcoming markets are post-General Election on May 8th and then June 12th. Put these dates in your diary now.
Please continue to support your Village Market.

Bonfires
It’s the beginning of warm days and evenings, so think before you light. Is it possible to compost or Green Bag it instead? Which way is the wind blowing? Has your neighbour hung out the washing or is having a children’s party (or adults!)?
North Somerset Council (tel: 01275 884 882), in line with other councils, does not have a “no bonfires” policy however their web site states:
“We do try to ensure bonfires do not become a nuisance in the community.
If someone continually causes a nuisance by lighting smoky bonfires, we can issue them with an abatement notice so that they are prevented from lighting them in the future. If these notices are ignored we may decide to prosecute, in which case a magistrates' court has the power to fine up to £5000.”
Let’s not go there and all be good neighbours. John Blain

Vouchers for Schools & Scouts/Brownies
Children from the parish are collecting vouchers from Tesco and Sainsbury's to put towards sports, gardening, cookery and computer equipment for both their local schools and scout/guide groups. Any vouchers you collect, if not already allocated, would be very gratefully received by my kids, Luke, Annie Wren and Finch T-P, for Christ Church School in Clifton, Long Ashton Scout Group and Failand Brownies.
Contact Pip A'Ness on 01275 375250 and we will collect, or drop them in or post them to West Barns, Home Farm, Home Farm Road, Abbots Leigh BS8 3QF.

- We want to meet with people in your neighbourhood at least once a month –in formal PACT (Partners & Communities Together) meetings, which are advertised, or you can invite us to your own group's meetings. We will come to groups like mother & toddlers, pensioners, football clubs or even the local supermarket.
- We will provide updates every month on local issues either at meetings or on our website.
- If you've been a victim of crime and you'd like us to visit, we will. We'll agree how often you want information on how the case is progressing – it could be as much as every month.
