Changes at the Parish Council

May and June were a busy period for the PC, with some significant comings & goings.

Chairman John Blain has decided to step down as Chairman of the Council, a post he has held for the last 6 years. This has required huge amounts of dedication, time and energy, and John feels it is time for someone else to take the reins. The rest of the Council, on behalf of the residents of Abbots Leigh, would like to register their appreciation to John for his untiring work on our behalf. Fortunately, he remains a member of the Council, so his knowledge and experience will not be lost.

We are delighted to say that David Parkinson has been elected as the new Chairman, as from June 8th.

Clerk to the Council The current Clerk, Elizabeth Whitehouse, is stepping down from her post on 9 July. Her successor, due to be appointed at an Extraordinary Parish Council Meeting on 24 June, after The Link goes to press, is John Bridge of 22 Dennyview Rd., BS8 3RB. Tel. 373726. He will take over the email address parishclerk@abbotsleigh.org.uk.

Village Hall Caretaker Peter Ellis left his job as caretaker at the end of May, and we are very pleased to welcome John Prodger as the new caretaker, together with his partner Janice. We hope they will be very happy as members of the Abbots Leigh community.

Reduce Rubbish and Recycling
  • Recycle envelopes with your paper but please remove the windows to reduce the contamination of the material
  • Recycle shredded paper by putting it in a cereal box or in a paper sack or large paper carrier bag and put it out with your green box
  • Find out more about what can be recycled at http://www.recyclenow.com/

Another way of Recycling

Items that may well be still of use but need a new home could be catered for by a local Freecycle Network.

Freecycle Logo The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving stuff for free. Each group is run by local volunteer moderators.

One rule: everything posted must be free. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, toys or an old door. Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself? Respond to the posting directly and you just might get it. After that it is up to the giver to set up a time for passing on the treasure.

LOCAL POLICING PLEDGE

Our beat officer, PC Trevor Byford, would like all to know of the Policing Pledge: The police service will support law abiding citizens and pursue criminals relentlessly to keep you & your neighbourhood safe. Our promise to you:
  • We will always treat you fairly.
  • We will make sure you know how to contact, and work with, your Safer Stronger Neighbourhood (SSN) teams.
  • These teams will be visibly working for you 80 per cent of their time.
  • The SSN teams will get back to you within 24 hours. If necessary we will provide a more detailed response ASAP.
  • We will aim to answer 999 calls within 10 seconds, & will get to emergencies as soon as we safely can. We aim to reach you within 15 min. in towns & cities (20 min. in rural areas).
  • In other cases, if you need us, we'll aim to be there within an hour for neighbourhood priorities (you can see what they are on our website). If it's better for you we'll make an appointment within 48 hours, or give advice, answer questions, or put you in touch with someone who can help.
  • We want to meet with people in your neighbourhood at least once a month –in formal PACT (Partners & Communities Together) meetings, which are advertised, or you can invite us to your own group's meetings. We will come to groups like mother & toddlers, pensioners, football clubs or even the local supermarket.
  • We will provide updates every month on local issues either at meetings or on our website.
  • If you've been a victim of crime and you'd like us to visit, we will. We'll agree how often you want information on how the case is progressing – it could be as much as every month.
  • If you are not happy with our service, we'll work with you to resolve things.
We want to do our best for you. If we fail to meet our Pledge we will always explain why it has not been possible to deliver the standards to which we aspire and you deserve.
