Think Bike!

With the darker evenings and a near incident on the main road with an unlit bicycle, it seems like a good moment to remind cyclists of the Highway Code, Clause 60:

“At night your cycle must have white front and red rear lights lit. It must also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if made after 1/10/85). White front reflectors and spoke reflectors will also help you to be seen. Flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.”

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE!

Refuse and Recycling (green boxes) for the majority of Abbots Leigh and Leigh Woods are on Wednesdays except Manor Lane and Manor Road beyond Manor Close which are Thursdays. It is the same week for the different recycling collections for everyone.

Good News For Recycling

North Somerset Council have decided to change waste and recycling services in North Somerset from next spring when a new waste and recycling collection contract is implemented.

As well as those materials already collected with the current green box scheme (paper, tins and cans, glass, textiles and shoes) the new and improved weekly kerbside recycling service will also include:
  • all types of cardboard
  • plastics
  • food and drink cartons
  • batteries
Also, food waste will be collected in special boxes on a weekly basis
Rubbish will be collected in wheelie bins fortnightly on alternate weeks to the green waste/ green bag collections

Dealing with disks

CDs and DVDs are made from polycarbonates that take an age to break down in landfill. Why not either pass unwanted disks on to friends or charity shops or offer them on community re-use sites such as Freecycle? Failing that, take them to a firm that offers safe recycling options, such as London Recycling (www.london-recycling.co.uk) or Waste Care (www.wastecare.co.uk/environmental-compliance). Another way of Recycling

Items that may well be still of use but need a new home could be catered for by a local Freecycle Network.

Freecycle Logo The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving stuff for free. Each group is run by local volunteer moderators.

One rule: everything posted must be free. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, toys or an old door. Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself? Respond to the posting directly and you just might get it. After that it is up to the giver to set up a time for passing on the treasure.

Attend A Parish Council Meeting

The Parish Council welcomes residents at council meetings (2nd Monday of each month) . You may listen. If you wish to address the meeting, you should contact Clerk to the Parish Council (above), in advance.

LOCAL POLICING PLEDGE

Our beat officer, PC Trevor Byford, would like all to know of the Policing Pledge: The police service will support law abiding citizens and pursue criminals relentlessly to keep you & your neighbourhood safe. Our promise to you:
  • We will always treat you fairly.
  • We will make sure you know how to contact, and work with, your Safer Stronger Neighbourhood (SSN) teams.
  • These teams will be visibly working for you 80 per cent of their time.
  • The SSN teams will get back to you within 24 hours. If necessary we will provide a more detailed response ASAP.
  • We will aim to answer 999 calls within 10 seconds, & will get to emergencies as soon as we safely can. We aim to reach you within 15 min. in towns & cities (20 min. in rural areas).
  • In other cases, if you need us, we'll aim to be there within an hour for neighbourhood priorities (you can see what they are on our website). If it's better for you we'll make an appointment within 48 hours, or give advice, answer questions, or put you in touch with someone who can help.
  • We want to meet with people in your neighbourhood at least once a month –in formal PACT (Partners & Communities Together) meetings, which are advertised, or you can invite us to your own group's meetings. We will come to groups like mother & toddlers, pensioners, football clubs or even the local supermarket.
  • We will provide updates every month on local issues either at meetings or on our website.
  • If you've been a victim of crime and you'd like us to visit, we will. We'll agree how often you want information on how the case is progressing – it could be as much as every month.
  • If you are not happy with our service, we'll work with you to resolve things.
We want to do our best for you. If we fail to meet our Pledge we will always explain why it has not been possible to deliver the standards to which we aspire and you deserve. Meet the Police

The community police hold a local surgery on the second Wednesday of every month, between 2 and 4pm outside St Mary’s Leigh Woods to discuss local matters in Leigh Woods and Abbots Leigh. If you have any concerns or need advice please go and discuss it with them. Next surgery is Wed 9th December.


Meet Your District Councillor (NB new date!)

Carl Francis-Pester holds a monthly surgery in the George Inn, Abbots Leigh between 10.30 and 12.00 noon, usually on the last Saturday of each month. However, to fit in with Christmas, his next visit is on Saturday 19th December. He welcomes local opinions - so call in and see him.
