Wade Family Connections

The Graves
Dear Marcus

I have just had a shock! I read your web site, and there you were, talking about my great great grandfather - Joseph Wade! I was so amazed at this I nearly fell off my chair - really!

I have done a considerable amount of research into the Wade side of my family and I was equally amazed to read the Email from Barry Billington asking for information.

I have a copy of your Village History book and have noted mentions of great great grandfather in there. I do go and visit great great grandfather's grave in Abbots Leigh church yard occasionally and tidy it up. He is there with Sarah, his wife, his oldest daughter (also Sarah) four of his children who did not make it past the age of 6 years (they are all buried in the next plot) and the other side of Joseph and Sarah is their eldest son, Charles Wade, his wife Rachel and their daughter Sarah (again!). Grave StoneSadly the stones are now very old, but still readable so I have photographed them and have them in my family history album.

I am not sure when Joseph and Sarah left Abbots Leigh, but later they are in Portishead (where I originate from) and indeed one of their daughters, and a grand daughter (who died when she was 4) are buried in Portishead churchyard, as are my Wade grandparents - it's getting morbid talking about all these churchyards!

I am very interested in who Barry Billington is and where he fits into the Wade line... and a book on the Wades?? Even more interesting.

Perhaps I could be put in touch with Barry and we could exchange Wade information? I know it is not strictly what you do, but this descendent of the Abbots Leigh Wades would be very keen to hear from another Wade albeit he is a long way away.

I do hope you will be able to help me and I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Rosalyn Wade.

It is rewarding when one can assist two people who are searching for the same history in touch with each other, I believe this has now happened on several occasions on information displayed on site and is very much a justification for its existence. Rosaly Wade and Barry Billington {see below) have been put in touch with each other.

Hi there,

Do you by any stretch of the imagination have anything there on my great Great Grandparents George Henry Wade born 1835 in Abbots Leigh and died a pioneer in New Zealand, 26 May 1911? His wife Sarah Jane Bessant, (1843-1903)of the now famous Bessant family in Somerset.

This is but a hope as I am almost finished a book on the Wade family and this came out of the blue from a person in Wells.

I have photographs of both if you wish them for any collection of past biographical history.

Regards
Barry Billington

Hi Barry,

A quick look in the Village History Book mentions the Wade Family represented by Joseph Wade in the following quote :-

"Democracy comes to Abbots Leigh"

Joseph & Sarah Wade (1810) "Until the Reform Act 1832, only freeholders of land worth more than 40 shillings a year had the parliamentary vote. In country areas the Act enfranchised £10 copyholders (whose predecessors' title was proved by a copy of their entry on the manor court roll), and certain leaseholders. The Mileses and Robert Bright already had the vote, but they were joined by the leaseholders Christopher George of the Priory, Francis Short the lawyer, John Russ Grant the vicar's son-in-law at the (old) vicarage, and farmers William Adams of Old Park, Joseph Fyson of Chapel Pill, John Vowles of Pound Batch, William Hearn, John Hollyman, Joseph Wade and Charles Powell. The franchise was further extended in 1867 and 1885.
"

Jos Wade is also recorded as holding Public Office In 1839 as "Overseer of Poor 1" having been in the previous year the "Overseer of Poor 2". Whether Jos Wade is directly related to your George Henry requires further investigation - can anybody help?

Barry has sent us the top picture which is one of his paintings for United Brewers and the above photo on the right which is of Joseph Wade(Senior) 1810-1854 and wife Sarah and son Joseph Wade(Junior) 1833-1914.

And also the following information:
Joseph Wade (1706 Wraxall Somerset) had a Manor in which his son decided to sell after his death. From Clevedon Archives I found reference DD\EN 20 and DD\EN 123 which states son is Nathaniel Wade, whom had eight children and one was an Abraham Wade (22 April 1792 and died 1851 and really it was his wife Martha Harding whom led me to our present family in New Zealand.

The Joseph Wade you have supplied information on has a direct link to this Abraham Wade as census documents I have, have him as at an address in Abbots Leigh

Dear Marcus,
My name is Naomi Cooper ( nee Southerington) and I lived at Manor View Cottage, Manor Lane, Abbots Leigh up until I was eighteen. I lived with my parents and 2 sisters. I was the middle of 3 girls. My parents were both Market Gardens (Gill and Frank Southerington).
All 3 of us girls went to Abbots Leigh Primary School. I saw on your web site that someone was enquiring about the primary school and wondered if anyone has any photos of the school. Yes!! I have a school photograph. Unfortunately I do not know the year that it was taken. Should you wish to have a copy of this photo, then please reply to me and I will forward it to you.
I was born in July 1955 and I am currently living in Twickenham, Middlesex. About 20 years ago my parents left Abbots Leigh and went to live in Norfolk. Unfortunately my Mum passed away in December 2000 and my Dad in June 2001.
I am not sure if there is anybody left in the village who would know of us now. I visited Abbots Leigh over 10 years ago and found to my dismay that my primary school that I so loved as a child had been converted to a private home. Oh well. life carries on!!
I love the information that you have on the village as it is nearly the last contact I have with my past childhood. I greatly look forward to hearing from you in the very near future.
Bye for now
Naomi

Dear Naomi
As someone who should know better I have run into difficulties with my website email on changing computers and did loose for a time most of my April Web site email.
I have just recovered most of it including yours. I would be interested in your photo and I am sure there are people who will remember you, once I get this information on site, to let people know.
As a resident of the village from 1982 I myself am a relative newcomer.
Sorry for the delay in replying.
Marcus

Naomi would love to know if anybody can name themselves, or others, in this photo. She is the one marked with an arrow called "me". I'd like to let you know about a new exciting event. We are launching a photographic competition to celebrate the wildlife and landscape of the Downs, Avon Gorge and Leigh Woods. We'd like people to enter images of these areas. They can be either black & white, colour or digital. There are separate categories for adults & children. Winning photos will be exhibited at the Bristol Festival of Nature and the Zoo in June. Full details at:

This email has been "lost" for the longest time. I have put the advert for this competition on the news page and hope it will attract some to go out this weekend and take some pictures

Hi
I have just discovered your great village site. I am one of those sad people researching our family history. My late wife was a White, her great grandfather was William White and was a farm bailiff somewhere in Abbots Leigh. on your site Steve Livings history of parish meetings mentions his son being persuaded into the 1914-18 war.

I have found record of three of their deaths, Ernest was killed on the HMS Princess Royal at the Battle of Jutland 31/5/1916, (his only son Ernest was a pilot in WW2 and died 29/9/1941 when his bomber crashed,he is buried at Weston Super Mare), Thomas at Salonika 30/9/1916, Gilbert at Mesopotamia 26/2/1917 (not Saloniki as stated on your war memorial).

I am still looking to find where William was employed and would be very grateful if any of your readers know of any books on the history of your village covering this period 1912 on.

Regards Ken Clark

I am at the moment enjoying a holiday in Seattle, the state of Washington, and have passed your email on to Steve. Good to hear from you

Hello Marcus
Just a note to congratulate you on the website developments. A small group of us are working on a new one for our United Parish with St Mary's Leigh Woods. We'll appreciate a bit of feedback when we run the trial in a few months time.
Albino Jackdaw - David Davies When I spotted David Davies' superb picture of the white jackdaw I remember seeing one such in our garden a few summers ago when I was lazing on our terrace reading "Sophie's World" and a chapter entitled "The White Crow". Thinking no-one would believe me when I told the story, I called over our gardener, Bernard, to act as a witness to the bird and the chapter title to which he exclaimed, "Stone the crows"!!
All the best,
Wo Hill

I shall be happy to comment on the new site layout - I find that more and more sites that are a pleasure to visit are appearing on the web. Even the gov.uk sites have been improved so that navigation is easier than in the past. The Internet is becoming a more positive addition to the human experience.
I agree David Davies's bird pictures are amazing.
